Braving the storm on a sea quest aka “Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters” Review

I want to be on a ship. Although, I don’t know whether I would get seasick or not, because I have never truly been out on the sea… Still, I want to be an a ship someday! Like Captain Jack Sparrow or Monkey D. Luffy (btw it’s Ruffy in German) or our brave little demigods Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase and Clarisse La Rue.

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan is the second book in the Percy Jackson series and takes readers back to Camp Half-Blood, where demigods (crossbreed children of a mortal human and a Greek God) can retreat and prepare for a world in which monsters attack them, simply because they are children of the Gods. In this book, our main character Percy does not only have to save camp but also his best friend, the satyr Grover.

Before I go on and give my two cents, I should add that I was watching the Disney Series Percy Jackson and the Olympians while reading. The second season just came out and I wanted to express how much I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the book series be adapted as well. With the third season coming out this year (2026), we are finally in un-adapted territory since the movies only got as far as book two. Anyhow, I am eating it all up and understand and love the changes the show has made thus far!

My favourite changes from book to show. Clarisse. I think that says enough XD. Seriously, though, I love that the show gave Clarisse more screen time and we really got to glimpse into her soul a bit. In the book, I hated the scene in which Clarisse yells at Polyphemus and is ultimately responsible for getting their ship to sink. Another difference was how the producers reinterpreted the last verse of the prophecy Clarisse got from the Oracle: “And fail without friends, to fly home alone”. Book Percy gives Clarisse money so that she can take a cap and a plane back to camp, but in the show they let Clarisse fly home on Blackjack, the pegasus.

Of Monsters and Gods and the inbetween. We are introduced to a new character this season: Tyson. He is Percy’s half-brother and son of Poseidon and a nymph. But most importantly: He is a cyclops. Atleast, that is an important piece of information to understand why the other characters treat him the way they do. As an outcast, a monster – something to mock Percy for. However, he accompanies Percy on his next quest and we learn to never judge a book by its cover. Tyson has fears and still has a lot to learn, but he is also strong and really tries to be helpful to others. I love how the others learn to appreciate him and how Percy accepts him as his brother in the end.

Percabeth. One of the most beloved fictional couples. Percy and Annabeth. I was spoiled by the internet of what is to come later in the book series, and I have heard a ton of people complain that the show is rushing Percabeth. Me? I like what they have done in the show so far. The slow burn is still there and I like that we get to see tiny moments that lay the groundwork for future development between the characters. Also, I absolutely adore the edits. Not just of Percabeth, but the whole show. Some editors have amazing talent. I especially love it when the music matches the scenes. Takes me back to when I was younger and watched edits of Katniss and Peeta from the Hunger Games. But back then I only had Youtube XD

I cannot wait to read “Titan’s Curse” (the third book in the series), but I think I’m gonna wait a bit, so that I can watch the show immediately after.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

(I think I would have given this 5 stars, if I had read it as a child/teen.)

With some of my shows having ended recently (Stranger Things, The Summer I turned Pretty, …), it is nice to have a new show to look forward to. So, hopefully we’ll see each other around December 2026, when season 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians drops.

Yours,

Tanniyan
