A Japanese movie to watch when you need study motivation aka Flying Colours

Okay, so I’m done with my thesis defence! I’ll tell you about that one some other day but for now let me just say how hard it was to sit down and study sometimes. The sunny weather didn’t help at all… I thought since some of you might also need study motivation, I wanted to share my secret weapon from high school days: Motivational movies 😀

This post is about a movie that will hopefully end your doomscrolling. Maybe you’ll find that spark again and sit down to study for real. I believe in you!

Flying Colours (Biri Gyaru/Gal, 2010)

I found this Japanese movie randomly on Youtube once and fell in love. The main character Sayaka had a hard time as a child but later found friends she would keep until high school. The only problem is that she found them after transferring to a girl’s school, moreover, to a class in which the girls do not seem to really care about studying. Her mother was okay with that because Sayaka finally seemed happy, so she let her be like this. In high school, however, Sayaka now realises that she wants more than just party and spend time with her friends. With her father only caring about her brother’s sports career, she feels neglected and maybe even kind of useless. Which is why she decides to prove that she is worth something, by applying to one of the best universities in the country: Keio university. However, her study level is at that of a primary school level still, so she has a lot of catching up to do.

You can see for yourself whether she manages to study and pass the entrance exam for university. It’s a movie about life goals and how difficult the path towards them can be sometimes. If you ever felt like giving up on your studies, please watch this. The movie also covers family and friendship since our goals often affect our surroundings as well. Just as much as others affect our goals – Sayaka, too, only tackles the university challenge because of an ambitious cram school teacher who believes in the potential of his students when the rest of the world (including their actual teachers) have already given up on them.

When I was still in school I used to watch this during every exam season XD That’s how much it motivated me to study. You get a ton of scenes of Sayaka or other students studying (and struggling to as well). The cinematography is beautiful, too – my favourite scene is the one in which Sayaka is riding her bike while practicing English pronouns. The sky just looks mesmerising in that scene.

Well, now you’ve read enough about the movie. It’s time to go see it yourself!

Enjoy the movie and the study session afterwards! <3

Yours,

Tanniyan
