A grandmother, mother and daughter talking way too fast aka Gilmore Girls

Winter is coming! And so is the time to rewatch Gilmore Girls for many fans 😀 Today I just want to share some of my love for that show.

I think I was in high school when I started watching Gilmore Girls. It ran on TV late at night on a weekday and I would always look forward to watching it. While I am at it, isn’t it weird how we could just start watching a show in the middle of the series and still be sucked into that world? It’s seldom that you would start watching a show at episode one on TV, unless it was premiering of course.

I loved the witty banter between the characters, the relationships between those characeters and just the whole small-town vibe and the cozy way it was shot. Watching the show is like someone wrapping a warm blanket around you on a cold and windy night. It makes you feel fuzzy and like you’re part of Stars Hollow. Not to forget that Rory is one of the reasons why I wanted to do better in school, so if you’re in need for study motivation, go for it!

Cold war in the family. Of course, I watched it for the famous mother-daughter dynamic that Rory and Lorelai portray but sometimes it wasn’t as much for them as for Lorelai and her mother Emily. I desperately wanted their relationship to get better and adored every moment in which you could see how much they cared about each other despite the cold shoulders most of the time. My favourite Lorelai x her parents moments include (spoiler):

  • When they attended her graduation. That proud look on their faces as they watch their daughter on stage. And then after, when Richard gifts her an envelope with money and Lorelai says “Thank you, daddy” – the expression on his face, to be called like that with so much endearment after who knows how long? Priceless.
  • Another moment I love is when Emily needs something from Richard’s computer and Lorelai helps her to Emily’s suprise. Lorelai displays her knowledge of running a business in that scene and Emily seems so impressed by that. Lorelai admits to have broken up a relationship with somene and is quite down because of it but Emily cheers her up by saying: “You are in a kayak. You know how to do all of this. […] Kayaks have paddles with things on both ends – you steer it by yourself. […] You provide for yourself. You’re not dependent on anyone. You’re independent. […] You’re gonna be fine.” The way Lorelai says “Thanks, mom” is just so pure and completely from the heart. (Probs to the actors and actresses btw!)

The fun of ship debates. Surely, shipping characters is a huge part of the show and if you like rooting for your ships then definitely watch Gilmore Girls. There are so many ships to root for! If you liked the whole Team Edward vs. Team Jacob love war then get ready for Team Dean vs. Team Jess vs. Team Logan – all of which are people Rory dated. For me, it will always be Team Jess but (spoiler) it needs to be the version of Jess we see near the end of the show, the guy who has finally figured out his life and is working towards a goal. This version is perfect for Rory.

As for Lorelai, there is no debate for me: it is and will always be Luke. <3 Sure, there are moments where I would like to whack his head (especially after he and Lorelai become a couple) but there are moments like that for every character and the slow-burn build up between them both is just too good!

Should you watch it? Yes. This show can be your hot chocolate to warm you up this winter, so why not give it a try? I’m sure you will fall in love with Stars Hollow and its citizens the same way I did: adorable chef Sookie, aspiring rockstar Lane (despite her strict but caring mom Mrs. Kim), relatable French concierge Michel (he’s like Squidward from Spongebob – the older you get, the more you understand them) and so many more to love!

Just give it a try! (Also, the pilot seems a bit slow, for me, at least, during the rewatch, I promise it gets better.)

Yours,

Tanniyan
